چکیده

Purpose. To evaluate the relationship between macular microstructures and visual function in retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Method. Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) and Goldmann perimetry were used to examine 100 eyes of 100 RP patients. The preserved photoreceptor outer segment (PROS) length was measured at the horizontal and vertical high definition line scans. The PROS area was calculated from slab image and line scans simultaneously. The visual field area (VFA) was quantified. Each retinal thickness was measured: inner retina (IRT), outer retina (ORT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and central retinal thickness (CRT). Results. The PROS area values acquired differently were consistent. The VFA was related significantly to the CRT, ORT, PROS length (vertical and horizontal), and PROS area (line scan and slab image). Visual acuity was correlated with the CRT, ORT, IRT, PROS length (horizontal and vertical), and PROS area (line scan and slab image) significantly. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the PROS horizontal length and ORT were related to the VFA and visual acuity, respectively. Conclusion. Among the macular microstructures, the PROS horizontal length and the ORT were most correlated with VFA and visual acuity, respectively. However, SFCT is not related to visual function.

Correlation between Visual Acuity and Optical Coherence Tomography-Measured Retinal Thickness in Diabetic Macular Edema

Background and Objective: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is one of the common complications of diabetes which significantly accounts for preventable visual impairment and blindness. Central macular thickness (CMT) is a feature found in DME patients. This study aims to determine the relationship between optical coherence tomography (OCT)-measured CMT and visual acuity (VA) in patients with DME bef...

Correlation between optical coherence tomography and multifocal electroretinogram findings with visual acuity in retinitis pigmentosa

INTRODUCTION Our purpose was to study the correlation between the macular morphology and function in eyes with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS Sixty-six eyes from 33 patients with RP and with different visual acuity (VA) were studied using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG). Correlation analysis was performed between VA, macular thickness, mfERG amp...

Morphologic characteristics and clinical significance of the macular-sparing area in patients with retinitis pigmentosa as revealed by multicolor imaging

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal disease caused by the degeneration of photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium cells within the eye. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of multicolor imaging as a novel technique for the depiction of morphological features in the macular area of patients with RP. Additionally, the correlation between the size of the macul...

Correlation between macular volume and focal macular electroretinogram in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.

PURPOSE To determine whether a significant correlation exists between the morphology of the macula measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the amplitude of focal macular electroretinograms (fmERGs) in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS fmERGs were recorded in 43 patients with RP and 43 age-similar normal subjects, with a 15 degrees stimulus spot, 5.6 to 5.8 mm in diam...
